Payphone removal in your community? Tell ACCAN about it
Payphones are an essential community resource, and their removal is often contentious.

Telstra consults on payphone removal before a decision is made. Phones slated for removal must have an orange sticker placed on them, advising how to lodge an objection.

ACCAN wants to hear about your experiences where a payphone has been removed, or a removal is being proposed. Share your story by making a comment below, or email us at info@accan.org.au. Be sure to include information about the location of the payphone.

Get involved - ACCAN submission to NSW Communications Inquiries

ACCAN invites you to help shape our submissions into two NSW Parliament inquiries into broadband and other communications services.

Are you Connected? Telecommunications Availability in Rural and Regional Communities is looking at differences between advertised service availability and consumer experiences of service levels; gaps in service provision in particular regions and options for improving service availability. Full details are here

Transforming Life Outside Cities: the Potential of Broadband Services looks at improving government services and efficiency in service delivery, including in the areas of education, health and justice services; improving the level of engagement of rural and regional communities in public life through new technologies and investigating the potential economic benefits from new technology on commercial and business opportunities in rural and regional communities. Full details are here

In particular, we’d like your feedback on the following questions:

• Has the removal or proposed removal of payphones affected your community?
• Do you have any examples of poor telecommunications services in your community?
• Have people with disabilities been able to access adequate communications services in your community? If not, why?
• Do you have any examples of challenges for people accessing NSW Government websites/online services in your community?

ACCAN needs your input by 3 March 2010, as submissions to both inquiries are due 5 March 2010. Please send written comments to info@accan.org.au or  contact Kirisha Thanapalasuntheram, Policy Assistant, on (02) 9288 4000.

Please let us know if you are submitting your own comments to either of the inquiries.
We look forward to your input, and appreciate your help in circulating this through to your NSW networks.
