Proposed requirements for the SMS Sender ID register
1 September 2025
ACCAN recently submitted to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA)’s proposed requirements to the SMS sender ID register consultation. The SMS sender ID register (the Register) aims to disrupt impersonation scams where a scammer sends an SMS/MMS with a sender ID (message header) that imitates a well-known brand.
The ACMA has developed a draft SMS Sender ID Register (Application, Access and Administration) Determination 2025 that sets the requirements for businesses and the telco industry to participate in the SMS sender ID register.
ACCAN recommends the ACMA:
Give due and appropriate consideration to the recommendations from ACCAN’s previous submissions
Include sufficient detail in the Standard and Determination to guarantee the consistent, robust and secure operation of the Register.
