ACCAN recently submitted to the Australian Telecommunications Alliance’s consultation on Draft Amendment No. 1/2026 to AS/CA S042.1:2025 Requirements for connection to an air interface of a Telecommunications Network— Part 1: General. ACCAN supports the proposed amendment to update references from the National Messaging System to AusAlert to reflect the change to the name of the new cell-broadcast national messaging system.

Telecommunications Legislation Amendment (Universal Outdoor Mobile Obligation) Bill 2025

ACCAN recently submitted to the Environment and Communications Legislation Committee on the Telecommunications Legislation Amendment (Universal Outdoor Mobile Obligation) Bill 2025 (the Bill). Our submission highlights the urgent need to mandate affordable Low Earth Orbit satellite (LEOSat)-compatible devices and plans, to set clear statutory objectives, constrain and guide the currently expansive powers vested in delegated legislation, and to strengthen consumer protections to ensure the Universal Outdoor Mobile Obligation (UOMO) delivers on its promise.

We argue that reforming the Telecommunications Act 1997 (Cth) to formally recognise telecommunications as an essential service is fundamental to ensuring equitable Medicare-funded telehealth access for regional, rural, and remote Australians.
