Digital services are critical for consumer’s everyday lives, but despite the important role these emerging services play in our lives - their regulation has lagged behind their evolution.
ACCAN is calling for the modernisation of consumer protections so that consumers can feel confident embracing the services of the future.
This means providing consumers protection from the misuse of their data, establishing an effective digital duty of care and getting the settings right to prevent scams on digital platforms. It also means ensuring that effective guardrails are set for AI as it.
We are calling for the establishment of a digital ombud so that when things do go wrong - they can be sorted out.
What we’re calling for:
Digital duty of care.
The advancement of digital competition reforms – pre-budget sub could be cited.
Expansion of the TIO.
Designation of digital platforms under the Scams Prevention Framework.
Advancement of privacy reforms.
Key items:
>>> POSITION PAPER (October 2025) - National register of telecommunications outages.
>>> SUBMISSION (June 2025) - Harnessing data and digital technology - Submission to Productivity Commission.
>>> SUBMISSION - Automated Decision-Making Reform Submission.

Digital Services and Artificial Intelligence
AI presents enormous benefits, but carries risks for privacy, data security and public trust. While millions of individuals and businesses use AI daily, 70% of people say that they would embrace AI further if strong rules were in place. We want to create guardrails that don’t pull the handbrake on progress.
