Senate Select Committee on Information Integrity on Climate Change and Energy

15 September 2025

ACCAN recently submitted to the Senate Select Committee on Information Integrity on Climate Change and Energy (the Committee)’s inquiry into the prevalence and impacts of misinformation and disinformation which relates to climate change and energy.

Reforms to address misinformation and disinformation should facilitate consumer trust in communications services and online platforms.

ACCAN recommends that the Committee should consider the following reforms to address misinformation and disinformation on communications services and online platforms:

  • Expand and modernise the powers of the Australian Communications and Media Authority to allow the regulator to establish minimum internal complaints and dispute resolution processes.

  • Require an external dispute resolution process in conjunction with mandatory internal dispute resolution processes for digital platforms.

  • Require the ACMA to publish information on measures taken by digital communications platforms in response to misinformation codes.
